About Us.

Two Dragons Martial Arts (TDMA) Studio

Proudly serving the Altadena and Pasadena communities for over 30 years, Two Dragons Martial Arts Studio is a cornerstone of personal and community growth. Founded in 1995 by the late Si Tai Gung Steve Hearring and Sipoo Shelene Hearring, TDMA embodies a legacy of excellence, discipline, and mutual respect.

Recognized in Best of Pasadena for 10 consecutive years and a recipient of the LA County 5th District John Anson Ford Human Relations Award, TDMA has cultivated a diverse, inclusive environment that empowers students of all ages and backgrounds to develop life skills through martial arts.

Under the leadership of Sipoo Shelene Hearring, a Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee, TDMA continues its mission to train students to exceed excellence. Sipoo Shelene’s dedication honors the legacy of her late husband, Si Tai Gung Steve Hearring, a Kenpo Hall of Famer and developer of Chaun Shu—a system blending Chinese Kenpo, Northern Sil Lum Kung Fu, and Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan.

Sipoo Shelene Hearring – A Trailblazer in Martial Arts

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Sipoo Shelene Hearring began her martial arts journey in 1973 as a means of self-protection. She studied Taekwondo before discovering Chinese Kenpo in 1976 under the late Si Tai Gung Steve Hearring at Senior Grandmaster Ed Parker’s Pasadena studio. This pivotal moment set her on a path of lifelong learning and dedication to martial arts.

Sipoo Shelene’s martial arts training flourished under the mentorship of Steve Hearring, whose passion and expertise inspired her to pursue mastery in multiple styles, including Northern and Southern Sil Lum Kung Fu and Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan. Over the years, she trained extensively in traditional weapons such as broadswords, spears, staff, cane, and the iron fan. Her journey into Tai Chi also awakened a deep appreciation for the healing aspects of martial arts.

In 1995, the couple established Two Dragons Martial Arts Studio, creating a collaborative learning environment rooted in discipline, leadership, and respect. After Steve’s passing in 2007, Sipoo Shelene carried the torch, dedicating herself to preserving and expanding his legacy.

As the sole owner and Chief Instructor of TDMA, she continues to inspire students with her unwavering commitment to excellence, her love for the martial arts, and her belief in the transformative power of training. Her two young adults, both champion Black Belt martial artists, carry forward the family’s legacy of excellence and community service.

Sipoo Shelene Hearring – Head Instructor

Sipoo Shelene Hearring’s martial arts journey began at the age of 16 in 1973 when she enrolled in a Taekwondo course at the University of California, Riverside. After seeking further confidence and protection, she was introduced to the late Senior Grandmaster Ed Parker’s Pasadena studio in 1976. It was here that Sipoo Shelene began her lifelong journey in Chinese Kenpo, under the guidance of her husband and teacher, Si Tai Gung Steve Hearring.

Steve Hearring was a black belt and manager at Mr. Parker’s Pasadena studio, and together, they built a life devoted to martial arts. Shelene’s commitment to her practice, alongside Steve, led them to open Two Dragons Martial Arts in Pasadena in 1995. Through their dedication, they developed Chaun Shu, a comprehensive martial arts system blending Chinese Kenpo, Northern Silum Kung Fu, and Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan.

Following Steve’s passing in 2007, Shelene took on the role of sole owner and chief instructor at TDMA, continuing their shared legacy and passion for martial arts. Over the years, Shelene has earned recognition for her contributions to the martial arts community, including induction into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame. Her two young adults, both accomplished Award Winning Black Belts, continue to carry on the family tradition.

Today, TDMA remains a vibrant, award-winning studio with a thriving community that values respect, integrity, and martial arts excellence. Sipoo Shelene Hearring continues to lead the studio with a deep commitment to her students, the martial arts community, and the memories of her beloved husband, Si Tai Gung Steve Hearring.
